it was never supposed to happen to us, i was never supposed to lose you. you are that favorite song of mine. the one i sang over and over until it was no longer the song for me, but now after all these other songs have played themselves out, i see that you are the one stuck in my head, the one i play over and over, trying to recapture the feeling i felt when i first heard it, trying to remember how it felt when it was my song, when you were my song, when you were mine.

i can keep pretending that i am unaffected, and that everything is okay. yes here, in the gloom and the grey, everything can be okay. And the sting in my toes when they freeze, with the wind through the naked trees, helps the thoughts within me stay free, of meaning, and pass with ease.
